Legal software

Legal software categories and when it's worth adopting one

What is legal software and when is it worth adopting?

Legal software is any system built to support the daily work of a law firm or legal department, from case management to document automation and client CRM. It's worth adopting when the team already feels a concrete pain point (missed deadlines, rework, manual intake that doesn't scale), not just to follow a market trend.

Main categories

Case and deadline management tracks case progress, calendars and alerts. Document automation generates a motion, contract or letter from a template or summary. Intake CRM is the sales pipeline integrated with WhatsApp/email, with a history per client. And compliance and e-discovery organize and search large document volumes for due diligence or audits.

Buying off-the-shelf vs. building custom

Most small/medium firms start with an off-the-shelf tool that covers the common case well. The decision to build (or adapt) something custom usually comes later, when the firm's process is too specific for generic software, or when integrating with a tool the team already uses (project management, calendar) matters more than having "everything in one system".

Evaluation criteria before adopting

Worth checking: does the firm's data stay under the firm's own control (not just the vendor's), does the system integrate with what the team already uses instead of duplicating information, and is there clear support/migration if you need to switch vendors later? Those three points avoid getting locked into a system that doesn't grow with the firm.
